Donate on Maha Siva Ratri Get the Blessing of Lord Siva to Krishna Bhakti

There is more than one Mahashivaratri story surrounding this occasion.

One is that Lord Shiva married Parvati on this day. So, it is a celebration of this sacred union.

Another is that when the Demigods and the Demons churned the ocean of Milk together to obtain ambrosia that lay in its depths. As they churned a pot of poison emerged. Lord Shiva consumed this poison, saving both the Demigods and the mankind. The poison lodged in the Lord’s throat, turned him blue. To honor the savior of the world Lord Shiva, this Shivratri is celebrated.

One more legend is that as mother Ganga descended from heaven in full force, Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks, and released her on to Earth gently as several streams. This prevented the calamities that could occur. As a tribute to Lord Shiva, the Shivalingas are bathed on this auspicious night.

It is also believed that Sadashiv appeared in the form of a Lingodhbhav Moorthi at midnight. Hence, people stay awake all night, offering prayers to the Lord Shiva.

While Kṛṣṇa was going to the fruit vendor very hastily, most of the grains He was holding fell. Nonetheless, the fruit vendor filled Kṛṣṇa’s hands with fruits, and her fruit basket was immediately filled with jewels and gold.
