The Sarva-pitru Mahalaya Amavasya is the concluding day of Pitru Paksha, a time when people remember their forefathers with gratitude and prayers. Traditionally, people perform śrāddha, tarpana, and charity to benefit the departed souls.

In the Bhagavad-gītā (9.26), Lord Kṛṣṇan assures us: “If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water, I will accept it.” When we offer food to Lord Kṛṣṇa and distribute it as prasādam, both the living and the departed are spiritually uplifted. This is confirmed in the Garuda Purāṇa, where the story of Gokarna and Dhundhukari demonstrates that hearing Śrīmad Bhāgavatam and offering devotion to the Lord liberates even the most fallen souls.

Thus, the greatest śrāddha is bhakti—serving Lord Kṛṣṇan and dedicating that service for the benefit of our ancestors. When one becomes a sincere devotee, one’s family members—then ten generations before and ten generations after are delivered—are blessed.

This Mahalaya Amavasya, join us in making a special offering of charity, prasādam, and scripture distribution in remembrance of your loved ones. Your contribution to ISKCON’s services will not only continue the flow of  kīrtana, prasādam, and śāstra but also serve as a śrāddha of eternal value for your ancestors. Feed the devotees of ISKCON Juhu and cows at Nilachal Vedic Village and get the blessings of Lord Krishna for your forefathers.

    Bhagavad Gita 2.40

In this endeavour of offering service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, you get eternal credit, and a little service offer to Lord Kṛṣṇa can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

    Srimad Bhagavatam 10.11.11

While Kṛṣṇa was going to the fruit vendor very hastily, most of the grains He was holding fell. Nonetheless, the fruit vendor filled Kṛṣṇa’s hands with fruits, and her fruit basket was immediately filled with jewels and gold.

    Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.35

It is the duty of every living being to perform welfare activities for the benefit of others with his life, wealth, intelligence and words.
