Gokarna and Dhundhukari – Deliverance through Bhāgavatam and Devotion
During the sacred fortnight of Pitru Paksha, devotees remember their forefathers and pray for their spiritual progress. The culmination of this period is Mahalaya Amavasya, a day specially recommended for offering śrāddha, tarpana, and bhakti-seva for the benefit of departed ancestors.
The Garuda Purāṇa narrates a remarkable history that highlights how departed souls can be delivered through devotion: the story of Gokarna and Dhundhukari.
The Fall of Dhundhukari
A pious brāhmaṇa named Atma-deva had two sons: Dharmaketu, who was gentle and righteous, and Dhundhukari, who chose a life of sin. Dhundhukari associated with gamblers, drunkards, and prostitutes. His greedy and violent behavior caused suffering to others and ultimately led to his own violent death at the hands of wicked companions. Because of his sinful activities, Dhundhukari became a preta—a restless ghost, wandering in great misery without a body. Such a fate shows how misuse of human life brings degradation even after death.
Gokarna’s Compassion
Dhundhukari had a dear friend, Gokarna, who was virtuous and devoted to the Lord. Seeing his friend’s pitiable condition as a ghost, Gokarna was moved by deep compassion. He sought the advice of saintly persons on how Dhundhukari could be delivered from his suffering. The sages explained that hearing Śrīmad Bhāgavatam with faith is the surest means of liberation, not only for the living but also for the departed.
Bhāgavata-Katha and Liberation
Following their instruction, Gokarna organized a seven-day recitation of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata-katha). Many sages and devotees gathered, and even Dhundhukari, in his subtle form, attentively heard the glories of Lord Kṛṣṇa. At the conclusion of the recitation, by the power of hearing the Bhāgavatam, Dhundhukari was completely purified. A celestial chariot descended, and he was carried to the spiritual realm, freed from his ghostly existence.
This incident demonstrates the eternal truth spoken by Śrīla Vyāsadeva:
“This Bhāgavata Purāṇa is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Kṛṣṇa to His own abode… Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in this age of Kali shall get light from this Purāṇa.”

Bhagavad Gita 2.40
In this endeavour of offering service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, you get eternal credit, and a little service offer to Lord Kṛṣṇa can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.
Srimad Bhagavatam 10.11.11
While Kṛṣṇa was going to the fruit vendor very hastily, most of the grains He was holding fell. Nonetheless, the fruit vendor filled Kṛṣṇa’s hands with fruits, and her fruit basket was immediately filled with jewels and gold.
Srimad Bhagavatam 10.22.35
It is the duty of every living being to perform welfare activities for the benefit of others with his life, wealth, intelligence and words.
