Who We Are
The teachings of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement, are based on sincerely and systematically cultivating true spiritual science which can free us from anxiety and restore the original nature of the soul of pure unending blissful consciousness in this life time itself.
ISKCON is a nonsectarian mission, which follows the teachings of Bhagavad-gita (song of God), a literal record of Lord Krishna’s words. The Absolute truth is contained in the Vedas – ancient spiritual scriptures.
The essence of Vedas is found in the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam (historical narration of the Supreme God, Sri Krishna). Srimad Bhagavatam basically teaches devotion to Krishna through the process of meditation. Meditation on glories of Lord Krishna. Both these scriptures, Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam are road maps towards perfecting our human existence. They glorify Krishna, the Supreme God who is eternal, all knowing, omnipresent, all powerful and all attractive. He is the seed giving father of all living beings. Therefore our process entails hearing, chanting and dancing the glories of the Lord which is the recognized method of religion in this age.
‘Krishna’ which means ‘all-attractive’, is also known by other names such as Jehnovah, Allah, etc. ISKCON belongs to the Brahma Madhava Gaudiya Sampradaya, a monotheistic tradition within the Vedic culture. It is part of the disciplic succession which has its origins Lord Krishna Himself and was continued by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a saint who appeared in 15th century.
ISKCON teaches that the goal of life is to develop love of God which is realized through practice of devotional service (bhakti-yoga). It aims to utilize this world by seeing everything within it as an opportunity to engage in Krishna’s service.
