Nilachal Dham Cultivates Varities of Rice
During the ongoing monsoon season, Nilachal Dham Farm, an eco-friendly farm by ISKCON Juhu has planted several desi (indigenous) varieties of rice like Lal Dangi, Padma, Kali Karsni, etc with the expert input of Sanak Kumar Das, Board Member of Govardhan EcoVillage. Due to the mass propaganda of hybrid seeds and massive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, several of the indigenous varieties of rice are on the verge of extinction. Nilachal Dham Farm, which eventually aspires to be self sufficient, aims to grow organic and medicinal rice.
The farm nursery has also acquired local seeds of ragi and samai (bagar) which will be cultivated this season along with arhar dal, mung dal, urad dal, til, khurasni and many varieties of vegetables like cucumber, ladies finger, pumpkin, karela, turia, gilka, chauli, suran, red pumpkin, papdi, etc.
Besides supplying organic milk daily to the temple for the Deities, organic marigold and desi roses arrive daily from the farm to the temple and are offered in service of Sri Sri Radha Rasabihariji.
