Gundica Marjana – Devotees Clean the Temple and Their Hearts
HG Devakinandan Das narrated the pastime about the Gundica Marjana cleaning as was done by originally by Lord Caitanya in Puri, Orrisa. Soon after the lecture, devotees sprang into action as they brought out cleaning brooms, washcloths, hosepipes and other cleaning materials. Within minutes, devotees had chosen their cleaning spot and were on the job. Much of the action was in the temple hall, were devotees engaged in cleaning the temple altar, door, floor, Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasasana, marble pillars, steps , sound systems, parikrama marg and the courtyards. Several devotees chose to stay in their respective department or offices and clean the same.
Gundica Marjana was originally conducted five hundred years ago, under the guidance of Lord Caitanya who demonstrated through his personal example by cleaning the Gundica temple in Puri, Orrisa, the day before the Lord Jagannath Rath yatra. The cleaning of the Gundica temple (where Lord Jagannath resides for few days after the Rath yatra) represents cleaning of one’s heart to allow entrance for the Lord.
